Harvest.and Post-harvest Technology of Fish

Welcome to the Society of Fisheries Fishery Technology is a composite discipline and embraces several basic and applied sciences and is a comparitavely littile known area of human endeavour. It has been only in the last quarter of a century  that important contributions were made in this branch of Science . The 158 papers included in this volume focus the findings of scientists in various aspects of fishery technology and the techniques employed by them with special reference to the indian Ocean. however a few papers report the result obtained and conclusion drawn fromm other region also. The papers included in this volume were presented and discussed at the symposium on Harvest and Post harvest technology of Fish, held at Cochin from November 24-27. 1982 by the society of Fisheries technologists(India).

The book is useful reference source and provides a unique and comprehensive coverage of various facets of harvest and post-harvest technology of fish in a single volume.

The Book contains following  sessions.

Resources
Fishing craft
Fishing gear and methods
Machinery, equipment and instrumentation
Handling and transportation of fish
Biochemistry and bacteriology of fish preservation and storage
Fish processing
Fishery products and by-products
Fish inspection and quality control
Extension and education in fisheries

Recent Trends in Processing of Low Cost Fish

This special issue of "Fishery Technology" contains papers presented in National workshop on "Low energy Fishing".       Welcome to the Society of FisheriesThe papers deals with development and deployment of low energy fishing techniques, design and construction of fuel efficient fishing vessels,   introduction of cheaper materials for construction, prevention of corrosion      and biodeterioration and other methods to be adopted in future.

The book include papers which deals with utilization of low cost fish landed in sizeable quantities through different operations. It covers very wide spectrum of fish" products from fishery wastes with emphasis on the development on the technology of production.

Welcome to the Society of FisheriesLow Energy Fishing

Development and deployment of low energy fishing techniques , design and construction of fuel efficient fishing vessels, introduction of cheaper materials for construction , prevention of corrosion and biodeterioration and efficient maintanance of fishing craft are perhaps the other methods to be adpoted in future, Also, emphasis has to be shifted from energy intensive fishing to low energy fishing practices . These methodologies on the harvest side in combination with the adoption of efficient posWelcome to the Society of Fisheriest harvest technologies probably can achieve the anticipated tangiable needs of fishing industry of the 21 st century.

Nutrients and Bioactive Substances in Aquatic Organisms

All over the world there is a growing interest in aquatic organisms as potential sources of valuable bioacdve substances. Recent research in this area has opened up new vistas of scientific research especially in biomedical agents and nutritionally important biornolecules.

In the post Dunkel era every nation has to make full use of its available resources, especially in fields like drugs, pharmaceuticals and health foods. Updating & consolidation of existing knowledge in this area and its disseniinaflon is the need of the hour. The international sympo- sium Nutrients and Bioacfive Substances in Aquafic Organisms (16-17 Sept. 1993) organised by Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) and Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (Indian Council of Agricultural Research) at Cochin, was an exercise in this direcfion.

The tropical countries are blessed with a variety of aquadc flora and fauna, which form veritable gold mines for the researchers in this area. Naturally the symposium attracted papers on drugs and antibiotics from microbes, toxins and venoms with various biological effects, pollutants in foods causing health hazards, wonder fishery byproducts with several biomedi- cal uses, nutrients of biomedical significance and a host of other pharmaceutical compounds Ue analgesics, anfipyrefics, anticoagulants, anficancer agents etc. Selected papers by leading scientists were edited and published to serve as an uptodate reference book for teachers & research- ers in the fields of Nutrients and Bioacdve substances.

This book printed in art paper, hard bound

and reasonably priced is divided into 5 wdons viz.,

Bioacfive Substances of aquade plant origin.

Bioactive Substances of aquabc animal origin.

Toxins

Nutrients & Pollutants

Advances and Priorities in Fisheries Technology

Welcome to the Society of FisheriesProceedings on the Symposium on "Advances and Priorities in Fishery Technology" Organised by SOFT(I) Contains more than 100 papers on various aspects of Advances in Fish" Technolgy by reputed scientists in the field.

About the Book

Fishery Science and Technology are on the threshold of revolutionary changes. Newer concepts in designs and materials in fishing gear and craft; newer species of fish and shell fish identified as a result of deep sea explorations; newer approaches and demands for fish-based value added products; structural changes in the national economic scenario - all these have thrown up a challenge to fishery scientists and technologists to come up with tangible solutions. Fishing and fish processing are operational spheres demanding high inputs of money, manpower and technology. Progress in either sphere cannot be achieved with out innovative technologies and technological upgrodations. This book is an attempt to highlight advances mode in fisheries technology and identify the future needs and priority areas. 106 scientific papers under six major headings viz., Resources, Fishing Techniques, Biochernis", Microbiology, Processing, Fishery Engineering, Extension and Infrastructure Development are included in this compendium. These articles are the edited versions of the papers presented at the symposium 'Advances and Priorities in Fisheries Technology' jointly organised by the SOFT(I) and CIFT at Cochin. This will be a valuable addition to any library.

Quality Assurance in Sea Food Processing

Welcome to the Society of FisheriesQuality and safety are the foundation of any food processing industry. Many a time the industry faces problems to meet the quality requirements. This is mainly due to lack of proper knowledge and infrastructure facilities.

Quality control of seafood for export has become mandatory in India from 1965 onwards through the compulsory Quality control and pre-shipment Inspection act, 1963. unit 1977 it was end product sampling of seafood, but it alone was not able to guarantee seafood safety. During the course of time, importing countries made the quality assurance programmes based on the Hazard Analysis  Critical Control point.(HACCP) concept.

All the topics in this book are written by Scientists of eminence in the respective field. This book contains 25 articles regarding various aspects of seafood quality. Chapters like " General Aspects of Seafood Quality," "Quality Problems in Seafood Industry",  good manufacturing  Practices ' etc. give valuable insight into the needs of maintaining quality in seafood industry. there are seperate chapters on all pathogenic bacteria encountered in seafood industry and their detection, enumeration and preventive measure are discussed in detail. Special emphasis is given to seafood toxins and bioorganic amines. trace metals are also given due importance. This book aims at continuous improvement of the process and organization by reducing variations and improving productivity in tune with the requirements of  WTO, codex Alimentations Commission and similar organizations.
